GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL AND RAIL EQUIPMENT IN SWITZERLAND

ALPINE Hergiswil is currently operating within the Infrastructure Division of Rencons under the name of Rencons Hergiswil and is a part of the following joint ventures: the TTG Consortium (Transtec Gotthard) with its sub-joint venture AFTTG (ARGE Fahrbahn Transtec Gotthard) and the TAT Consortium (Tunnel Alp Transit-Ticino). The company is participating in the construction of the world’s longest railway tunnel, the Gotthard Base Tunnel in the Swiss Alps. In addition, Rencons Hergiswil is providing the state-of-the-art railway technology for the project. The projects are being implemented in partnership with some of the leading international construction companies.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a railway tunnel that consists of two 57 kilometre long single track tubes. The total length of the tunnel system, including all cross-passages, access tunnels and shafts, is over 152 km. The Gotthard Base Tunnel will increase total transport capacity across the Alps, reduce the impact on the environment and decrease travel time for passenger trains by connecting Zürich with Milan and Lugano. With the construction of this tunnel, Switzerland will be integrated into the growing European high-speed rail network.

In September 2013, the TAT consortium completed excavation of 16.1 km (Fadio lot, including the 2.6 km adit) and 16.4 km (Bodio lot) of the tunnel. Some minor works were completed in March 2014. The TTG consortium is responsible for the railway technology in the Gotthard Base Tunnel. The consortium ensures construction of the slab track, 50Hz power supply, the cable systems, traction power supply of 16.7 Hz telecommunications, and safety systems. The works are scheduled for completion in May 2016.
